1. Tiny Living – These homes range from 120 to 500 sq. ft. and include mobile tiny houses, micro apartments, and shipping container homes. They require a compromise on space but offer flexibility and lower costs.

2. Vehicle Conversions – Whether it’s an RV or a converted school bus, these mobile homes offer a unique blend of lifestyle and mobility.

3. Houseboats – A great option for water lovers, houseboats can be more spacious and affordable than condos, but come with maintenance and seasonal weather considerations.

4. Eco Homes – Environmentally conscious living includes passive houses that reduce energy consumption and off-grid homes that are self-reliant.

5. Laneway Homes – Typically built in urban alleys or behind existing homes, laneway houses can be new builds or garage conversions. However, not all municipalities allow them.

Things to Consider: Alternative homes can be affordable, but may come with trade-offs in space, location, or build quality. Mortgage and insurance qualification may also be challenging.
